“The fat burning zone myth”
Are you a sugar burner or fat burner? Getting into your fat burning zone is relative to nutrient timing. There is no special zone that guarantees you will be burning fat! As long as there are sugars or carbohydrates in the system, your body will need to utilize that as your primary source of energy before it can start using fat. It may take more than one hour in an exercise class before you burn through the sugar to get into the fat, depending on your diet.
If you are on a low carbohydrate diet, you will be in a fat burning zone quicker. In terms of exercise, the higher the intensity, the sooner you start burning fat. Some concepts market a specific zone to burn fat but neglect to inform you of the nutrient timing. The best time to do low intensity cardio, for instance, is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach or post workout. In the morning you have fasted all night and post workout, you’ve burned through the sugar. Now it’s fat burning time! If it’s a random time of the day, you must do high intensity to react fat burning.
Below is an example of high intensity interval training
Each interval is one minute long for a total of 15 minutes.
